Overview of Services
Upon an initial appointment we will work together to establish your specific treatment goals. Massage therapy can help you to improve posture, reduce stress, overcome chronic pain, or recover from a traumatic incident. We will modify each session towards your needs on that day, as our goal is to leave you feeling completely fulfilled after your massage treatment. To stay on track with your health and wellness goals we always provide homecare tools and education, so that you can continue to improve on your own in a safe and effective manner.
‘Myo’ means muscle and ‘fascia’ is the connective tissue that is found throughout our body. Fascia is a densely woven substance that surrounds and penetrates every muscle, bone, artery, vein, nerve and organ of the body. This collagenous fiber is normally soft and pliable but can become restricted, tight, hardened or thickened (as in scar tissue). When this happens, it can restrict the movement of muscles and joints, therby decreasing your range of motion. Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands on technique that involves applying sustained pressure into the connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore optimal range of motion and tissue health.
Each muscle has potential trigger points, which can become activated by muscle overuse, inflammation, trauma, weakness or neglect. These trigger points can cause pain around the effected muscle (or even refer pain to other areas of the body!) There are common trigger point patterns that have been documented, for example, by applying compression to the shoulders (upper trapezuis) one may feel “refered” pain in the neck and head. Trigger points can be released with sustained pressure, friction modalities, and relaxed diaphragmatic breathing, restoring blood and nutrient flow to the area.
Relaxation massage aims to help you get back in touch with your body and reduce any unnecassary built up stress. By tuning into your breath and out of your head, a relaxation focused massage can help to balance your hormones (ie. lowering cortisol levels and increasing serotonin) and has been proven to reduce depression and anxiety symptoms. Calm, fluid massage strokes will warm and nourish the tissues and increase circulation, washing away your stress. Relaxation techniques can lower blood pressure, alleviate headaches and tension and decrease restlessness. By feeling nurtured and ‘whole’, you reconnect with the vital energy within you, and leave feeling well and rejuvenated.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage helps decrease adhesions (like scar tissue) and physically break down muscle and fascial “knots” that can disrupt circulation and cause pain. Deep massage focuses on specific regions, such as localized muscle pain, or limited range of motion. By working through layers of tissue in a slow, targeted manner, tissue length and range of motion in joints will increase, which decreases inflammation and stops what we call a “pain-tension cycle”.
